Pro Angler Sabrina Thompson is onto something with her new show “Women vs Lake.” She has teamed up with Impossible Filmworks to bring you a new Reality Show. “Women vs Lake” is aimed at encouraging women to step out of their comfort zone, and get out on the water to challenge themselves on the lakes in their home towns. Pam Martin-Wells finishes Classic and makes History!

History has been made and it is in the form of fishing’s finest woman angler. Pam Martin-Wells finished in 22nd place in the Bassmaster Classic 2010 and although she fought hard for first like all of the other anglers, she still had a victory. In the history of the Bassmaster Classic there has been only one other female angler to get the grand opportunity to make it into the tournament, but Martin-Wells was able to trump that by making it into the final day. What does this say to the world of fishing? Well, it makes it very clear that women are in it to win it, just like the men. Martin-Wells has set the tone for all female anglers, that yes we can fish with the men and do well. Will the loss of the WBT make a difference in how women anglers will qualify for the Classic? Yes, more than likely, but hard work pays off. Pam Martin-Wells is a prime example that if professional women anglers work hard and are consistent, they can make it to the top.

New Opportunities Arise Tournament Anglers!

Well, I have to say I was not pleased with Bassmaster’s hasty and poor decision to end the WBT. This rocked the boat for some and others it pushed the boat completely over in a whirlwind of confusion. Even though this is not the end, it was a cold reminder to some of us aspiring to be professional competitors and those already pro, that we have to work double-time to get back in the boat.

There is a new day arising in ladies tournament fishing, however, and it is coming from the IFBBA. The International Federation of “Black Bass” Anglers has started a Womens Bass Division and will be hosting a tour starting in March. The details for this event can be found under the “Tournaments/Contests” tab of this blog. This is a wonderful opportunity to build this tour into a newly established, large-scale Womens Tour. There are still chances for large sponsors to get involved in a great event and a chance for those sponsors to show their support for women tournament anglers and women anglers in general. Without the support of women anglers, big name companies and sponsors, including marketing and promotional activities, this tour may end up like the WBT and become a distant memory in the minds of those who have moved on.

Bassmasters Removal of the WBT! What?!

Well the first of the year has come and gone and what do my wondering eyes should appear? I’ll tell you! A tweet from Bassmasters announcing their decision to eliminate the Women’s Bassmaster Tour! My mouth dropped to the floor and in my disappointment, I had to see what the reason was for this detriment to the advancement of women’s professional angling.

The post, dated Jan.4 2010, basically makes the case that there was declining participation for the WBT since the initial opening of the tour in 1995. Now, I could have given them that, if there weren’t so many factors that they could have tried to use to enhance the participation levels. My first thought was about how there was significantly less press and marketing for the WBT compared to the Men’s Bassmaster Classic or Elite Tours. How is the WBT going to grow or take off if there is no push or excitement made for it? Then, there is always the little factor of getting qualified to participate in the WBT. I’m an angler and I know that as far as BASS clubs go, they have women anglers but how many of them make it to the competing levels locally, not to mention statewide. Then there are the entry fees, so out of the few women that have earned a place in the WBT you now have to come up with the sponsors and/or money to be able to compete in the tournament. Now, these things individually may not have contributed to the demise of the tour, but combined they equal a bad mix that was never going to go anywhere without some help.

I, for one, had aspirations of getting into professional tournaments, but now feel like I have been slapped in the face and told to go sit down! I can’t imagine how pro anglers, such as Pam Martin-Wells or Judy Wong feel about this. A major door just closed for us and I’m just wanting to know where are the protests, outrage and disgust for this push aside attitude presented by this decision. Am I the only one? Please tell me it ain’t so! Leave your comments and feelings about this, I would like to know how you ladies feel about this.

Christmas Time Is Here!

Wow, time flies by so fast and next thing you know it’s Christmas. I know I have been M.I.A. for awhile, but I’ve been trying to get all of my family and friends taken care of for Christmas, not to mention all of my other motherly and wifely duties. This time of year is so hectic and I realized that there has to be some solace in the Holidays that I am just not seeing. Maybe, that’s just it! I’m looking too hard for the “Ahhhhh!” moment and not enjoying all that the Holiday’s are supposed to bring. Instead, I’m running here and going there and looking for deals and so on and so on. Take it from me, make the Holiday Season about family and good friends. Enjoy the precious thing called time and bask in the glow of your children, family, or spouse. If you are single, bask in your accomplishments for this year and what new and interesting things you have planned for the next.

So what is my point? The point is that we are so caught up in the hustle and bustle, that we sometimes forget about the true things that matter: love, togetherness, inspiration, celebration, and being thankful. Count your Blessings and enjoy your Holidays!
